Julie Wilson - Colours
With encouragement from her appearance at the Norfolk Island Jazz Festival and inspiration from her visit to the New Orleans Jazzfest, Julie Wilson has recorded a CD of unqualified joy!

Opening with the bright and bouncy Almost Like Being In Love and followed by a swinging version of You’re Awful, Julie sets the pace for this very enjoyable album.

The CD features a number of jazz standards including a dynamic version of Ray Charles’ Hallelujah I Love Him So and a funky rendition of Walkin’ After Midnight. She also includes a soulful version of the Julie London classic Cry Me a River.

Four tunes penned by Julie and her husband, producer and arranger Mark Tinson, are also on the album.

Julie shows why I’ve Thrown My List Away won the best jazz song at the 2002 Newcastle ABC Music Awards.

Her rendition of the Tinson/Wilson tune Goodbye Melancholy Me is a romantic and haunting ballad that makes you want more.

The group of musicians that gives Julie excellent heartfelt support on the album comprises –

Nic Cecire and Robbie Coxon on drums
Peter Gray – bass
Terence Koo – piano
Trevor Furner – sax and
Bob Henderson – trumpet

My standout track? Well, they are all good but Julie’s version of Feelin’ Good by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse is a favourite. However, this is an album that grows on you, so after a couple more plays who knows?

I can thoroughly recommend the album and urge any serious jazz fans to attend Julie’s CD launch on Sunday 10 August at 2pm at the Newcastle Conservation Concert Hall. Most of Julie’s supporting musicians will be there together with Rod Barnes and Sax Blue.

What more could a person want?
